Smelter
Smelts ore into ingots and blows glass from sand — five metals, thirteen bottles, and a melt you do not come back for within a day is lost.

The Smelter is the other half of mining, and it does two jobs that look nothing alike.
Ingots. Ore goes in, metal comes out, and the ladder climbs with the profession: iron is 10 ore at level 0, copper 10 ore at level 1, silver 25 ore at level 2 and gold 50 ore at level 3. Steel is the odd one — 20 iron ore *and* 4 coal, ten minutes, at level 1. Those ingots are what the forge presses into tools, weapons and the blank coin bags a mint needs.
Glass. Thirteen of the eighteen recipes here are bottles, blown from sand and a mould — five small at level 1, three potion bottles at level 1, five large at level 2. If a colony bottles anything or brews potions, somebody is running a smelter for the glassware, and the video never mentions it.
Anyone may use it at level 0, so a non-smelter can make iron ingots — but earns no crafting experience and has to enter the ingredients by hand every time. Everything above iron needs the profession.
Two warnings. Every ingot must be collected within a day — the glass need not be — so do not start a melt you will not be back for. Once an ingot is in your bag it keeps indefinitely; stockpiling costs you nothing. And if you ask for more than your ore covers, the craft fails and takes the ingredients anyway. Check what you are holding before you press craft.
