The silver vein is a gatherable seam of silver ore. Take out an iron pickaxe, left-click, and it works like every other SL Colonies gatherable. Nothing else will open it, and it takes the same time to gather as any other vein.
Silver sits in the middle of the coin chain. The smelter turns the ore into ingots, the smith turns ingots into bags of blank coins, and a coin mint presses a player's own symbol onto the blanks — which is how currency with somebody's name on it ends up in every colonist's HUD.
For owners: silver is on the slow setting, back every seven days. One vein is one gather a week for one miner, so if you want silver worked on your land, put down several rather than one. Long left click opens the owner menu, where spawn points let a gathered vein return anywhere on your sim in any rotation you like.
