The Leather Rack is where a ranger turns prepared hide into the two things the rest of the colony is waiting on. You need to be a ranger of level 1 — no other profession can use it at all.
It is a mini-game, not a recipe list. Unlike every other station, there is no HUD and no web app: you hold a key and press the arrow directions it calls for, the same way the sharpening stone works. Get three of five right and the hide is worked. Get three wrong and you have ruined it — it drops back to scrap hide, and five of those go through the leather tanner again to rebuild a single animal hide. A bad run genuinely costs you.
Leather goes to the smiths and carpenters: bows, sword grips, and the leather that furniture and clothing are trimmed with.
Parchment is the quieter one and the more strategic. It goes to the Engineering Bench, where it is the material that copies a researched plan — the loom's patterns, the sewing table's plans, the carpentry drafts. No parchment means no copies, which means the seamstress cannot weave a patterned cloth and the carpenter cannot build furniture from a draft.
That is what makes a ranger load-bearing rather than optional: two other professions stop at this rack.
