The iron vein is a gatherable seam of iron ore. Take out an iron pickaxe, left-click, and it works like every other SL Colonies gatherable. Nothing else will open it, and it takes the same time to gather as any other vein.
Ore goes to the smelter and comes back as ingots. Beside it, the copper, silver and gold seams carry on from there to the smith and the coin mint, where a player's own symbol is pressed onto blank coins — so a hillside with all four veins in it feeds both the forge and the currency.
For owners: iron is one of the two quick veins, back long before silver or gold. Long left click opens the owner menu, where spawn points let a gathered vein return anywhere on your sim in any rotation you like. Leave that feature alone and it comes back exactly where it stood.
