A colony is the group you belong to — a house, a bloodline, a guard. Unlike a land group it needs no rez rights, so you can bring people in without handing them build permissions, and every member wears the colony name in their meter title wherever they go.
You belong to exactly one, and you lead only one. That is what makes a faction mean something rather than being another tag to collect.
Set any object's security to Colony and only your own people can use it. Run the rest from My Colony on the website: accept or decline requests, set each member's title individually, and talk in a private encrypted colony chat.
You can also rename the world to suit yours. Every race and every profession can be relabelled for your lands — if Dragon Born does not fit your setting, call it something that does, and that is what your colonists' meters read.
